On April 23, 2018, 11 people were killed and 15 injured, when 25-year-old Alek Minassian drove a rented van down a major street in downtown Toronto, deliberately plowing through pedestrians. Within hours of being arrested, Minassian identified himself as an incel, an identity taken up by a large number of mostly white, heterosexual men who define this identity with a deep resentment and hostility toward women who they feel are denying them sexual relationships. Incel culture promotes violence and other destructive behaviours toward women. It is also proliferating online in shadowy parts of the internet. Boys Like Me seeks to understand the culture and how damaging and dangerous its potential is.
