Fiasco: The AIDS Crisis
A comprehensive retelling of the early days of the AIDS epidemic in America. There was so much misinformation, prejudice, and fear swirling around HIV/AIDS that decisions were made that had lasting impacts on the victims of the virus. People were subjected to some pretty inhuman treatment and on a political level struggled to get the treatment they needed because of the taboos and prejudice that were always adjacent to the public image of HIV/AIDS. I always love the way that Leon Neyfakh tells us about history. Some podcasts miss the finer details of context that are required to tell a story in its full nuanced colour. But Neyfakh never slips here and the thoroughness and careful backgrounding to all his retelling ensures an immersive, informative, and often emotional listening experience.
Though Audible podcasts are often behind a paywall, Fiasco: The AIDS Crisis is fortunately available on all podcast platforms for free (as of April 2024).
